In the Bible, (NIV version) Romans chapter 6, verse 23 states;

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

All religions of the world are focused on man trying to reach God, primarily by our own efforts or goodness.  Most of us realize that we aren't perfect, but when we compare ourselves to other people we usually feel that we are good people.  If you don't fall into that category and you know you aren't a "good" person, it is easier to understand that you are a sinner.  But the God of the bible explains to us that sin is falling short of being perfect as He is perfect.  He doesn't grade on a curve as we often have experienced in school grades.  God sets the standard of perfection in himself and none of us can come close to that standard of holiness.

Most religions give you a way to earn or work your way to a state of "goodness" worthy of being accepted by god.  However, the God of the bible tells us in the book of Ephesians chapter 2, verses 8 & 9;

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast."

So we can not work our way to a relationship with God, it is a gift to us through Christ Jesus.

Perhaps this can be understood best by the following illustration.

Here we see an illustration of two dwelling places separated by a great gap.  Man is always trying to get to God on the other side of the gap.  The problem is that no matter how great our effort, we cannot get across to the other side where God is.

God states that the "wages of sin is death."   Wages are what we earn for the sin we have committed.

In I John 1:8 & 10 We are told: "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.... If we claim we have not sinned, we make him (God) out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives."

So, we neet to accept that we are sinners and that the consequence for our sin is death.  Death is eternal separation from God.

However, the scripture from Romans continues with a BUT.  This is our hope!

...."But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

We are given a gift of eternal life, of life with God, in favor with God, by His grace.  Grace means unmerited favor.  We don't deserve it, He chooses to give it to us.  But this gift is given through Jesus Christ our Lord.

So, Jesus comes and stands in that gap so that we can get to God.

But how is it that Jesus can do this?

Jesus chose to leave heaven..................yes, He existed before the world began, (see John 1:1-5 & 14) and became a man.  He lived a holy, sinless life and chose to take the consequences of our sin upon himself.  In other words, you were the one that was to be hung on that cross because of your sin, and Jesus came and exchanged places with you and took that punishment upon himself and gave you his holiness.  Now God sees you as holy through his Son's sacrifice and you are acceptable to Him.

Again, here is an illustration;

As you can see in this illustration, Jesus stands in the gap and gives us eternal life with God.  This eternal life can begin right now and it is defined as an abundant, fulfilled life filled with a peace that passes understanding.

If you don't have this abundant life with God and you would like to, just do the following.

1. Confess or admit or agree with God that you are a sinner in need of a savior.

2. Understand that Jesus took your sin upon himself upon that cross and gave you His righteousness. That He died on that cross and rose again and is now with God the Father.

3. Receive the gift of new eternal life with God.

Prayer is just communication or talking with God and Jesus.  So confess in prayer and receive in faith that you are "saved" from eternal separation from God.

4. Seek out a chruch or fellowship where you can grow in your knowledge and love of God.
